Computed tomography, commonly called a CT or CAT scan, uses X-rays and computer technology to create detailed cross-sectional images of the body. CT can provide information about bones, organs, soft tissues, and blood vessels that may not be visible on a standard X-ray.
Some CT exams use intravenous or oral contrast material to make certain tissues, organs, or blood vessels easier to see. CT scans are generally quick, noninvasive, and painless.

You may be asked not to eat or drink for several hours before certain CT exams, particularly when contrast material will be used. If you have previously had a reaction to contrast, your physician may prescribe medication to take before the exam. Follow the timing and dosage instructions provided by your healthcare team carefully.
Wear comfortable clothing and leave jewelry and other metal accessories at home when possible. You may be asked to change into a gown before the exam.
