Ultrasound

Ultrasound, also called sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of organs, tissues, and blood flow inside the body. It is a safe, noninvasive imaging method for patients of all ages.

Ultrasound may be used to examine the abdomen, pelvis, thyroid, blood vessels, and other areas of the body. It is also commonly used during pregnancy and to help guide certain medical procedures.

Preparing for your ultrasound:

Preparation depends on the type of ultrasound you are having. Please follow the specific instructions provided when your appointment is scheduled.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to change into a gown or remove clothing and jewelry from the area being examined.

For some abdominal ultrasound exams, you may be asked not to eat or drink for several hours beforehand. For certain kidney or pelvic exams, you may be asked to drink water before your appointment and arrive with a full bladder.
